Soybeans in their pods make an easy appetizer or hors d'oeuvres. You might know them by their Japanese name, edamame, although boiled soybeans are also served in Chinese cuisine as maodou (毛豆). Although hard to find fresh, you can usually find them in the frozen section of both Asian grocery stores and even regular grocery stores. Simply boil, salt and serve.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • soybeans in shell (edamame), frozen or fresh
  • sea salt

Recipe Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add a dash of salt.
  • Cut off the stem end of soybeans (if you'd like, you can also leave them on). Add the amount of soybeans that you'd like. Boil until the pods float on the surface - taste to make sure the beans are tender - about 4-5 minutes. Don't overboil!
  • Drain and sprinkle with rock salt.
